There is no "Discussion" tab under the section Digitization -- http://www.webjunction.org/digitization/. I would like to post a link to a blog that I saw recently about a special type of DVD burner that might be of interest. Could someone please add the tab? Thanks.

Hi James -- that's a great point. We've had a number of requests to increase the "primary" and "secondary" lists. We're still looking at options but I can tell you that some flavor of ILL (acquisitions and/or collection development is another) is coming soon.

Why is Access Services or Interlibrary Loan or even Resource Sharing NOT listed as options for Primary Role or Secondary Role on the registration page!?!?!? Yea OK so I can add it as Other, but that kinda defeats the purpose of a Controlled Vocabulary. I'm assuming these Roles will help find and connect with other librarians doing the same work. That will only happen if we use the same terminology to describe what we do.

Hi Bob -- Thanks for posting this.

Short story: We're working on it. Longer story? Read on...

As you probably know, we have multiple instances of WebJunction (The main site, sites for our state partners, a site for admin use, etc). Some of these have access restricted to specific populations.

Right now, the logic that generates our Activity feeds shows you all the activity of your friends, no matter where they are posting (such as Jennifer's post on a Partner admin site). This is behavior is confusing because members will often see links they may not have access to. And then when they try to click the links, members see the behavior you experienced -- a redirection to the public profile.

I know this is a jarring experience. It's especially frustrating for us because it hits hardest the folks who are using the updates portlet just the way we intended -- as a community discovery tool!

The good news is that we have identified a fix and are prioritizing with other profile items in our next development cycle.

We'll keep you posted.

Heh. It's a matter of choices, I'm afraid, with the current architecture riffing off of personal connections (a la Facebook, etc.) rather than abstracted interests (arranged as trees, more or less).

But you know that only too well.

I can see how to do both, but having the base structure in trees simplifies things ... the "personal connections" become a (very local) facet.

Thanks to the pointer to Caucus, Bob. I had seen it briefly a couple years ago -- it looks like they've continued improving it. The University of Washington has a similar (probably less sophisticated) tool for online learning/communication. It sometimes came up a little shy in the feature department, but was a rock solid tool for conversations with classmates.

I appreciate how Caucus folks allude to the complexity inherent in adding things like a CMS (and LMS) to the mix. We've done some really great stuff integrating those essential systems on the Next WebJunction platform; we just need to rejigger the machine to bump up discussion/group discoverability a bit.

Seriously Bob, we hear you loud and clear. Right now we're trying to decide how best to deliver a solution for the long term (as Chrystie mentioned... is this something we budget development resources for or can we do it via content/programming efforts?). We'll keep you in the loop!

I totally agree. We need to find some way to better surface the discussions in aggregate. Either via the software, or program/content. Maybe a front page on the home page or the member center page?

The pagination is fine, Tim. Navigation *to* discussions, though, is very difficult unless someone you've friended posts and you're informed of it (not always accurate, btw).

Hi Kathy,

Since the lion's share of the content is applicable to Public Libraries, the Library Type section was to create a space specifically for other types of libraries. But that is obviously not made clear enough, so we'll do some tweaking of the overview tab and make sure people can find the public library-focused sections of the site.
